Professor Per-Olof Berggren has received 4 major distinctions during 2012: Alex Hirsch from Karolinska Institutet, Wallenberg Scholars, The Novo Nordisk Foundation Advanced Grant and Kroc Lecture at Boston University Medical Center.
Professor Berggren’s distinctions are for the following achievements:
- Axel Hirsch Prize from Karolinska Institutet. The prize is for scientific achievements, which are potentially of major significance to the treatment of diseases such as type II diabetes. Professor Per-Olof Berggren receives the Axel Hirsch Prize for his discoveries on insulin release in the pancreas
- Wallenberg Scholars from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Stiftelse. The programme supports and stimulates some of the most successful researchers at Swedish universities. Per-Olof Berggren is one of two researchers at Karolinska Institutet who now has been awarded SEK 15 million each to be divided over a period of five years.
- The Novo Nordisk Foundation Advanced Grant. Professor Berggren has been awarded DKK 10 million to be divided over a period of five years for the project “An in vivo imaging approach to study pancreatic β-cell Ca2+ signaling”
- Kroc Lecture, Boston University Medical Center.
